From Handsworth to Flanders Field

Rookery School has a fine World War 1 memorial in its Red Hall. It also has a school log book recording life at school during the war years, 1914-1918. With Secret City Arts, I’ve been working with pupils and teachers to explore this heritage, and to uncover stories of the soldiers, their families, and pupils at school during World War 1. Some of today’s pupils live in the same houses as the soldiers named on the war memorial –  although the local community has changed profoundly in the century in between. I’m gathering poems and texts on light and darkness from different faith traditions for Birmingham Cathedral’s 300th anniversary, which we’re celebrating with inter-faith arts explorations by artists in very different media. There was a solar eclipse in 1715, the year the cathedral was founded. Three hundred years later, there is another eclipse on 20 March 2015. Hence our theme: light, darkness and the Enlightenment. The Big Hoot

The Big Hoot

Working with older adults in Attwood Green in a Secret City project, real live owls from Hagley Falconry Centre swooped into community rooms, starting a rich project for the Big Hoot. We wrote stories, poems and memories on paper feathers, which will go on to feather up a larger-than-life Owlet for the summer display. More here. Watch this space…
