Map of Birmingham Conversationland

The Birmingham Conversations brought together people of many faiths and none in our super-diverse city to reflect on the role of faiths in the public sphere. Since the Conversations launch in Sept 2016, my Conversationland map has been touring with Jake Lever’s fabulous painting Dance, spending two weeks on display at synagogues, mosques and churches, as well as at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery around the city. Instant Poetry – a new delight!

I’m a recent beginner at Instant Poetry, but it’s been a wonderful revelation, inviting complete strangers (and the occasional old friend) to work with me as we talk and write an Instant Poem together. A happy Poetry on Loan session at a Baby Shower in Bridgnorth Library on themes of ‘From’, ‘Soon’ and ‘Wish’. Chain of memories at the Black Country Museum

It was a complete treat working at the Black Country Living Museum on four summer Thursdays this year. While the children got busy making little books, maps and concertina booklets to record their visits – I invited adults to write on links for a paper chain of memories about work in previous generations in their families. Some amazing stories emerged – 350 years’ of soldiering – that’s as far back as the Great Fire of London in 1666! Less laborious than the real chainmaking outdoors, our chain of memories kept on growing and growing. This was after two days. Eventually it hung around two walls....
