Recipe for a City Feast

  Birminghammmmm… it’s a feast! We gathered recipes and food memories from many traditions, faiths and cultures at a series of workshops at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. And at an intergenerational writing workshop called ‘My Mother’s Cookbook’, people wrote family stories written between the lines in cookery notebooks and oral traditions. Comfort food, ancestral memories, hunger, battles of will or wish – food carries all sorts of resonances and symbolism, not all of it easy. Writing Our Roots

We’ve been taking inspiration from family legends, migration stories and old photographs like this one of my grandmother and her sister as young girls. I’ve been teaching a short course with Writing West Midlands, exploring new ways to write memoir and family history. Fantastically rich family stories and all sorts of questions are emerging – truth or fiction? Can we capture or create voices?
